Luck, Coffee, & Burns

Luck

This weekend, I ran some errands in preparation for St. Patty's Day. The liquor store had exactly what I needed in one adorable package.

Lucky.

I broke a ten at the liquor store and my total at the gas station was one penny more than the amount of change from my ten.

Lucky.

As I left the gas station, I found a penny (heads up!) just outside my driver-side door. I picked it up and added it to the other two precariously balanced on my dashboard clock ledge.

Lucky.

Coffee

The Dunkin' & Deceivin' project is only getting better these days. On Monday, I dealt with my first male Dunkin' Donuts cashier. He called me a traitor for using a Starbucks mug, but then he only charged me the refill price. So he was the most upset and most generous DD cashier I've encountered in the project.

Today when I picked up coffee for my roommate and myself, the girl working only charged me for a small refill (my cup is a little bit larger than a medium) so I got my coffee for a record $1.30. She also insisted on putting on my lid because she could lose her job if the coffee spilled and I got burned.

Turns out DD coffee is heated to 120 degrees. Or maybe she said 190. It's been a long day.

Burns

Sunday, when I was baking what should have been my lucky cupcakes, I ran into a bit of a snag. As I checked the cupcakes for doneness, I put my oven mitt on my right hand and did the checking with my left. I usually do this checking the other way around. So, when I was sure that the cupcakes weren't, in fact, done, I raised my right hand (with oven mitt) in the air and attempted to shove the oven rack back in with my (naked) left hand.

So unbelievably unlucky.

Now I am sporting three nicely lined up burns across the first three fingers of my left hand. I have a recurring dream about cutting myself and getting stitches across the tips of the fingers on my left hand, so this burn is especially... interesting.

Luckily the cupcakes rocked hardcore, the burns aren't painful anymore, and my grandmother presented me with a shiny new Dunkin' Donuts giftcard when I surprised her last week.

I feel like you have a really great excuse for procrastinating your paper since your hand is burned. Sheesh. How did I just now hear about this??

I'm very impressed that your three colors (green, brown, and red) match the Jameson bottle. Was that part of the plan?

WOW! Okay obviously St. Pat's is the time to get burned. I burned myself TWICE that day! Before that I hadn't been burned since last September when I was working in a bakery!

So where are your freakin burn-worthy cupcakes???

Empress: I finished and turned in the paper today. Ugh. I hope I never have to see that book or paper again.

Evan: Haha. That was not at all part of the plan. I'm just good like that.

HTEAC: I think this is the first time I've actually burned myself over cupcakes. A lot of firsts these days...

I sadly forgot to take pictures of the cupcakes, but I made Smitten Kitchen's Car Bombs (http://smittenkitchen.com/2009/01/car-bomb-cupcakes/) and they were absolutely fantastic. I followed the recipe exactly and wouldn't change a thing.

I recently briefed the Liebeck v. McDonald's case for class. I learned all about coffee temperatures and their burning capabilities. 120 degrees would be cooler than most coffees made at home in a coffee pot. 190 degrees would be the temperature McDonald's served their coffee to customers. At this temperature, it takes 2 seconds for a liquid to produce a third degree burn on a person's body. Interesting, huh?

Jess: 190 it is. :)
