I love Wanda Sykes. But... who doesn't?
Anyway, the ad that I heard this morning featured a male football player calling out two girls for saying "that's so gay." At the end of the spot, one girl says to the other, "Oh no! That guy's a football player and now he totally thinks we suck!" The comment is a little bit funny in an after school special way, but the message that football player equals cool equals someone who thinks before they speak is a good one.
However... the DJ did his best to help us miss that point.
As soon as the ad ended, he started running off in this manner. I paraphrase.
Yeah, think before you speak. That's a good idea. The only thing that I don't really like about that ad is that the girls say that guy telling them to think before they speak is a football player. And, in my experience, it's not usually the football players who are all [insert mockingly sweet, effeminate voice here] 'hey guys, let's do the right thing, okay?' So, that's my only problem. I don't buy it. It just doesn't fit the stereotype.
Thankfully, he cut to weather just then. I used that reprieve to praise him for his uncanny ability to miss the point completely.
He said it all without even a hint of irony. Of course he did.
He came back (too soon in my opinion) to say 'I'm not saying that football players aren't intellectual or anything.'
I took that opportunity to balance out my earlier praise with some good ol' fashioned cursing.
Really, Bangor DJ?! Really?
Somebody please take his mic away.
This story was much funnier in person, but it's still quite amusing. As for Wanda Sykes, you're right, we all love her. I can't say the same about the radio in Bangor.
ReplyDeleteOh radio. I definitely don't miss it. I could listen to it here, but it's just so not worth it. I'd have to listen to it through my alarm clock and that's just too much effort.
